Causes of Cancer

Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to the DNA within cells. These mutations can be inherited, acquired due to environmental exposures, or occur randomly. Some common causes and risk factors include:

  • Tobacco use (smoking and chewing)
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Obesity and poor nutrition
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Exposure to UV and ionizing radiation
  • Exposure to certain chemicals and pollutants
  • Chronic infections (such as HPV, Hepatitis B and C, H. pylori)
  • Family history and genetic predisposition
  • Ageing and hormonal factors

Can Cancer Be Prevented?

While not all cancers are preventable, many can be avoided by reducing risk factors. Quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, protecting yourself from the sun, and getting regular screenings can all help lower your risk.
